I need another fridge.

My friend's daughter was supposed to be baptized last night. Then we had 25 inches of snow in less than 24 hours, and it shut down the city- they actually declared a snow emergency in the city. My friend was able to dig out of her driveway, but the street wasn't plowed, so she couldn't go anywhere! Her husband had to walk down to the main road and catch a ride to work. The baptism was to be postponed until today, Sunday, but then her youngest (who is only 8 days older than 'Nica) got a fever this morning. So the whole thing is called off.

This prompted me to decide how to store the cakes we designed and made together for her daughter's baptism. There is a 9x13 sheet cake, and a tiered cake with a 9" round base and a 6" round with a fondant/gumpaste bow on top. It takes up quite a bit of room. But I can't leave it sitting out all week (we think the baptism will be rescheduled for next Saturday). I thought about covering it and putting it outside to freeze- it's currently 10-degrees outside. But, if it warms up enough to start to thaw, and then freezes again, and thaws and freezes... you see the problem.

So, I cleared some space out of my refrigerator, covered the individual cakes like crazy with plastic wrap, and now will limit my fresh produce purchases so as to keep enough space (we drink nearly 5 gallons of milk in our house each week, and that takes up a LOT of space in our fridge.) It'll be tight, and I'm still a little worried about kids bumping (or "tasting") the cakes, or something falling on top of them. Still, I think they'll be okay. I hope they'll be okay.

So that you can see what the cakes look like assembled (and not covered in plastic wrap), here are some photos:

And, yes, everything on the cakes is edible- box, bow, flowers & leaves included (not that you would want to eat them).

Beautiful! You make the loveliest cakes. I'm very impressed.

I just want to know how you will top these for the actual wedding cake. You don't need a fridge, you need a freezer! Good luck! So sorry for Alexandra to have to wait awhile longer.

Oh, my word. If her baptism cakes look that beautiful, what is her wedding cake going to look like? So sad about the baptism! How does that happen?

We'll still have the baptism- just later (maybe this Saturday if we don't get another snow-dump!)

I don't know that I can do much better for an actual wedding cake. This was work, but a lot of fun. I love the piped frosting details. The bow was really cool to make. The carnations are the best I've ever made- they look even more real than the last ones I made. And, they're more delicate, too (I've crushed a few petals and broken them off, sadly).

Travis said I can't get a freezer until we move. I'm trying to patiently bide my time (just because I don't want to have to move it, either!)

We appreciate all your fridge space! If I could have come out, I could have come to get the cakes, or at least some of them. Probably safer at your house, though; who knows what Bijoux would have done to them! I would have needed a lock.

Ali can't wait to see the cake herself!
