We girls took a road trip to Indianapolis this week. I packed all three girls, and their loads of pillows, toys, clothes, diapers, pull-ups, stroller, bed, and other child paraphernalia with me and started on the three-hour drive from South Bend to Indy.
Despite the fact that Zoë became sick the moment we walked in the door ("Mom, I have a headache" and a temperature over 100F), we still had a great time visiting with Buffy and Jack. Visits to a nature preserve, dinner at a mexican restaurant (and repeated trips to the bathroom for Megan), and shopping at CostCo on our way out of town were the highlights. Zoë would have had more fun if she hadn't been sick, but she was still a trouper.
We played with trains (the girls brought the Ikea train set and the Gordon engine they borrowed from a friend). We read books. We watched Dumbo and Peter Pan. We held hands when we went anywhere outside, and the cousins sang each other to sleep. Old McDonald and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star being the songs of choice. My girls were sad to leave Jack behind when we left on Wednesday. They are very excited to head to Indy next month for their Uncle's graduation from Law School.
Our trip home was quiet and, thankfully, uneventful. I was very glad we had a van to travel with this time. I doubt we would've been able to fit all of us with all our stuff in a car! But, then again, maybe I could've done without all the stuff. And, yet, I used the pack-n-play, the baby swing, the 10 changes of clothes, the thermometer, the potty chair, and could've probably used a few other things, too!
A friend said that traveling gets much easier when the kids get older and become more independent. I really believe it will be easier, but I thought this (short) trip was still a lot of fun. Maybe we will drive to Houston this summer...
