See below for the story. This is just an update:
Megan got a fever yesterday. I knew this because she looked up at me, her body slumped a little, and said, "Mom? I got a headache" holding her hand to her forehead. I took her temp and it was 100.9 F (axillary). We went to the doctor.
Since Miranda was also having some symptoms (the most telling for me was the crying-while-nursing, which broke my heart! and the head shaking. It was like she was shaking her head "NO!!!").
Both girls have full-blown ear infections in BOTH ears! So much for the drops. They did get rid of some of the pain, but obviously the red ear was more than just viral fluid and erythematous injection.
Now, all 3 girls are on their third course of antibiotics this year! (nope, not this "winter" but just the last 3 months). We have a follow up with the pediatrician for an "ear check" in 2 weeks...

Ear Infection Addendum

Jack had to do three different rounds of antibiotics last year, and he never showed any outward symptoms. They found the double infection during a well-baby check. Then at the next follow-up appointment. And then the next.
So I spent the whole time wondering if it was really necessary to treat it in the first place since it wasn't bothering him at all? Or was the risk of more permanent damage high enough to justify the treatment?
After posting this addendum, I spoke with our bishop, who practiced medicine as a family physician for a number of years.
He said that he wouldn't treat a "red ear", particularly if they had cold symptoms. However, once they got a fever, he figured it was better to treat with antibiotics.
I feel justified with Megan. I wondered about Miranda, but now that she's sleeping and eating better, I figure that the antibiotics were also necessary for her. She still shakes her head, but not nearly as much. It's nice to have my sweet babies back!
With your family history of hearing problems, I don't doubt that you did the right thing with treating Jack's ears. He's such an easy-going kid, and doesn't complain about pain ever.
I guess it comes down to feeling comfortable as a mom, and talking things through with your pediatrician so you understand what you're doing.
