Zoë's very first movie in a theater was Cars. Nana went with us to see it, and we went for the works- popcorn and soda as well. The movie was ok, but Zoë enjoyed the outing.
Megan's first movie was The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything. Also an ok movie (the psycho cheese and the Rock Monster are favorites, as was the music). Miranda was an infant and nursed 80% of the time. Megan and Zoë had fun, and we did get popcorn again.
I didn't realize I was creating such an expectation. Wanting to make the first special, I didn't see that I was setting a standard for movie-going. I've since had to explain that we don't get "treats" every time we watch a movie. I don't know if it's sunk in, tho'.
An afternoon a few weeks back, I offered to let the girls watch a movie. They asked if they could have a "Movie-ator" (a.k.a. "Movie Theater"). I pulled out the TV trays, popped some popcorn, mixed some apple juice and water in strawed cups, dropped some animal crackers with the other goodies on a tray, and set up the video. They were in HEAVEN!
Yes, we do have special evenings at home with our "Movie-ator", and the girls love it. I love how much they love it! However, I don't think it's going to reinforce that we won't always have treats to eat when we go to the Movies...

What a party! My girls love to turn off the lights and have popcorn to watch a movie. It elevates the fun to Party status (with a capital "P"). Makes me wonder why I would ever bother to take them to a theater.
If you have animal crackers, that's something to slip into the purse when you go the theater. It's generally not something they confiscate.
Sadly enough, I must admit that that is what big diaper bags are for. The kids have to buy their own popcorn with money they earn, and cheap mom brings some drinks and crackers or fruit snacks in the big diaper bag. And no, I don't particularly feel guilty...a bit rebellious and "living on the edge" but not guilty..
What great memories you are making...who needs the "theater"?
