My impression of books is obviously different from what most people find good. Have you heard of Goodreads? It allows you to log in and give a rating to books you've read, then allows others to see your review, and see what you like, and see an average rating of the books. Just looking at the top 5 books that have the highest average rating (of books I've also read), I agree with only 2 of them having high score (where others were giving 4.5/5, I was giving less than 3!)
I am not shy about sharing my opinion at book group, sometimes I think to the chagrin of others there. I try to keep quiet, but it always seems that I do feel rather strongly about certain things. I think I just don't always convey my impressions very well. It is my hope to get better at drawing other's opinions out, and not just expressing my own.
Still, I believe that when it comes to books, the more popular they are, the less I like them, with a few exceptions. But, then, who can argue with really good books/literature? Or a really good niche story (I find my tastes in Sci Fi mesh more with the conventional).
I'm always still one for a quick "trashy romance" novel. Not trashy necessarily because of the bedroom scenes, but just because there is usually so little to recommend it so far as thought-provoking or mental exercise while reading. Yes, it's candy. But, hey, I need a treat every now and then!
