I was at a potluck at a park last night with friends from church. The girls were off playing and having a grand ol' time, but it was getting late and we needed to head home. I whistled, which brought a few daughters to me (Zoë quickly, Megan halfheartedly, Miranda ignoring the call), so of course I called out (me having a little more difficulty walking over and grabbing them a half-football-field away). "Maaay-gaaaan!"
I hear this little echo behind me, "Meee-aaaahn" pause "M-aaannnnaaaaa". I turn around and there at the picnic bench is Veronica, grinning up at me. She calls again, "Meee-aaaahn" pause "M-aaannnnaaaaa". A couple that I knew looked at me with surprise in their eyes, and then started laughing as they asked, "Is she really calling her sisters?"
Yup. But she doesn't call Zoë (yet).
Remember, babies learn through repetition. We've been inside a lot lately, too. That says quite a bit about how my daughters respond to my calling them, via whistle or name.
