Our dishwasher started growling yesterday. No, not the one that is also the chauffer, nurse maid, nanny, nurse, etc and has had little sleep due to a nursing baby and sick kids. It's the one that works off water and electricity, the portable one that gives me counter space to work on (because there is NO OTHER counter space), and gets dishes clean and sanitized.
We called the landlord. He can't replace it, and doesn't really want to, but might (if it can't be fixed) if we are going to stay here another year, but he doesn't know when he can afford to replace it.
I guess I'll be washing the dishes by hand.
I know, I know. It isn't all that bad. I have many families in our area/ward who don't have a dishwashing machine. I washed dishes all through my teenage years (my dad refused to fix or replace our dishwasher when we lived in Washington).
But, I like my amenities, and this was a deal breaker on many of the places I looked at renting.
And yet, washing dishes adds character, gives time for reflexion, is soothing, is like threading beads on an un-knotted string.
What's your favorite work about chores? or washing dishes in particular?

Dishwashing Woes

Let's be honest... doing dishes by hand sucks.
Why don't you look on Craigs list and see if you can't find one on there. Paul and I picked ours up for about 150. Then when you move you can decided if you want to take it to your next place or ask the landlord to reimburse you!
When it rains it pours doesn't it?!
We have had colds and coughs running rampant here, including Cambira. which makes mommy nervous.
Hope your kiddo's are starting to feel better here soon.
If nothing else washing dishes by hands builds character and makes you appreciate even more the mordern day luxuries... right?
It's kind of fun, on occasion, when the water is warm and the house is cold and the children are quiet, to wash plates, and only plates, by hand.
But other than that, it stinks. I'm sorry.
We just got over the pukes, and now Olivia's been home for a couple days with strep. Gotta love winter, eh?
Although I AM the dishwasher at our house, I can't say it is my favorite chore. I do like it better than cleaning the toilet, however. BUT I don't like unloading a dishwasher either. I think the only thing I like about dishwashers is that the dishes are probably more sanitized than when I wash them. Ask my mom and husband, I am not the best dishwasher...Anyway, I do like it when I can wash the dishes after each meal and the kitchen looks clean. You kind of have to when there is no counter space, though, right?
Enough rambling, I think the best thing about washing dishes is the fact that it is a labor of love. How many "chores" do we as homemakers (see your list) that are repetitive, yet very necessary for the success of our households and families. When we wash the same plate that we washed two other times that day or wash the same outfit we washed a couple of days ago, we are showing our family that we love them.
We replaced ours dishwasher a couple of years ago with what we thought to be a nice dishwasher - it was Kitchenaid, we thought a good brand - cost enough to be good quality, and it has been nothing but horrible. The soap never comes out of the soap dispenser, the dishes aren't clean half of the time. Some days I get so frustrated with it that I just wash the dishes by hand - they get cleaner, and I'm going to have to do it anyway. I don't mind horribly unless it is winter and my hands are so dry they are cracked - then the water hurts them, but other than that it isn't too bad - except for the finding a place to put them. I can fill up a drainer and sink with just stuff that didn't fit in the dishwasher most days. Washing all means wash, dry, put away, repeat. :) My sink actually faces the living room so I can watch TV (not that I can hear it) or I can watch the kids playing if they are in there while I work.
I feel for you. We just replaced ours a week ago. It had been broken since the end of October! In December I started buying paper products cause even with a dishwasher we never had enough cups and spoons.....I realized that I still do tons of 'hand - washing' dishwasher or not because of the pots and pans. I used the broken dishwasher for the "drying rack". My sis in law was here and saw me loading dishes into it. She said, "I'm really confused - I thought your dishwasher was broken. But you still are loading it." Haha. Best drying rack I ever had. Now I wish I still had an "extra" broken dishwasher to dry my pots and pans in :)
