Interaction

I saw something very interesting today: A woman was pushing a little girl (probably a toddler over 2 years old) in a stroller, and she had the tell-tale tail of white wire from her ear buds to an unknown music player.

I have an iPod. I love it! It's a simple little "old fashioned" iPod Nano, the one that doesn't play video. I don't use it much. Why? Because when would I be listening to something by myself? When can I really tune out of my environment enough to put in my own ear buds and listen to music or books on tape or anything? That would be when I could listen to it on the stereo (and, although my earphones are great, there's nothing like the speaker's I married in to).

I have little ones running, scooting, or other-type-locomotion-ing around, getting into whatever I really want them not to get into, and doing things that require one ear be somewhat aware of where they are and what noises they are (or are not!) making. How can I possibly do that with ear buds in?

Then, if we go on walks, where I'm sure they are with me and occupied (for example, with the woman I saw with the child this morning), my girls keep up a constant stream of chatter that demands my attention. They thrive on my interactions with them, especially when they are positive. Sitting in the van, they tell me stories, ask me questions, and talk with me (yes, not just at, but with, although it isn't exactly subject material that I'm always interested in). If I were to put in my ear buds, these golden opportunities for interaction would be lost.

So, is that why my girls are so verbal? Is that why they chatter so much? Should I put in my ear buds?

Alas, for now, I think I will have to wait for a future time when I can listen to things on my iPod. For now, I'll just plug it into the car stereo and we can all sing along to primary songs, or children's songs. Even if it isn't always what I want to hear, at least it's still fun!

Oh, and as for walks. Well, let's just say I even enjoy those conversation opportunities.

She was missing out! I love going on walks with my kids and pointing things out to them, and them to me (we saw blue birds and turtles on the Riverside trail!), or just talking about stuff. They are only little for so long, soon, we'll be wondering when they are going to call us again.

I agree. The only time my mp3 player gets used is when I'm on the treadmill at the gym.

I hate to say it, but I listen to my iPod when I'm walking with Beck and our dogs. When he's in the stroller he doesn't talk much, so I actually love it. I don't blast what's playing though, so I don't find it hard to interact with him still. He's got my almost undivided attention the rest of the day, so hopefully that doesn't make me a bad mom!

I listen to my iPod when I'm mopping the floor or cleaning the bathroom or doing something else I despise. It keeps me going. And I don't really like interacting with my children when I'm doing those jobs anyway. (PLEASE don't step on the floor with those dirty feet!) I do like playing "I Spy' with my girls when we go on walks. Or just listening in on their crazy conversations with each other.

Nikko- I forgot! I use my iPod for that, too. Maybe I forgot because I haven't been to the gym in forever.

I didn't think it was wrong or bad for this woman (was she the girl's mom? I couldn't tell) to be listening to music while walking. I am just a person that when I put on music, I love to ignore everything and everyone else. I want to become absorbed in the sound and feeling of what I'm hearing, and I would either become a) irritated that my kids wanted to talk to me, or b) get us hit by a car because I wasn't watching my environment. Yeah, I become that absorbed.

There are DEFINITELY times when both my children and I need to not interact (although I try to limit that to "rest time"). Maybe if I had to walk a dog I'd use my iPod more...

Emilee- I don't mop the floor or clean the bathroom (except when I get some help), so maybe those are more reasons why I don't use my iPod. Although, like I said, I prefer my stereo, and I can turn that on plenty loud to drown out the kids....

Due to work obligations, I find myself alone frequently and having a bit of conversation from NPR or BBC Radio 4 passes the time much more pleasantly. I'm also a huge fan of the Nike+ pedometer add-on for the Nano series.

I actually put my buds in once when my oldest was in an exuberant mood and I didn't want to squelch it but I also couldn't stand the noise level. I didn't listen to anything--I used them just to dim the din.

INteresting observation,. Have you ever read "Farenheit 451"? This is why I cannot give so much into technology--in particular the ear buds. Yikes!
