Random Thoughts about Beds

1. I love the smell of clean sheets- with just a hint of bleach in them. There's nothing like sliding your tired body into crisp-but-nearly-soft sheets that smell sooooo good. I don't like them as crunchy as my grandma's line-dried sheets are, but hers smell the best.

2. How long is a mattress supposed to last?

3. Do you have depressions in your mattress? I heard that turning it every few months is suppose to help that. We have some minor depressions, but after 10 years, I'd thought we'd have more. Maybe it's because there's not a whole lot of room for the 2 of us in a queen bed (Travis didn't want me to "get away"), or maybe it's because I flip and turn and roll so much that the mattress doesn't have time to "settle".

4. I hate making beds. It's even worse on Mondays (my laundry day) when I have to change 4 sets of sheets! (but it is worth it; see #1) Does one change them weekly? biweekly? monthly? annually?

5. I hate re-making the bed when somebody has an accident/throws up/etc. And, why does this always seem to happen on the day I change the sheets? Does the smell set of a chain reaction leading to the sheets needing to be immediately changed? Does the smell from the closet dampen this effect?

6. Although pretty, bed spreads are a nightmare. I love Megan's bedspread right now. All you really have to do is pull it up and there are nearly no wrinkles or problems with straightening it. Still, Megan does a great job making her bed. Zoë's is the hardest, ruffles and frills everywhere. I'm very impressed with how well she makes her bed.

7. How often does one wash blankets/pillows? I find that I "get around" to it about twice a year- barring any accidents requiring immediate washing.

8. I still really (someday) want to get a bed frame. Travis doesn't like them- they're too constricting. I'm trying to convince him (and find one) that one without a footboard would work. Maybe then I could sit up in bed without it sliding away from the wall...

9. How long does one keep a baby in her crib? I'm sure how quickly they crawl out of it is a big factor. (No, none of my children have crawled out, yet. But, Miranda is my climber, so I can see her getting there earlier than later).

10. Are toddler beds worth it? Zoë and Megan went right into regular twin beds. But, I am thinking that space is becoming a premium so...

11. What about bunk beds? And, does one get the stripped-down Ikea model, or the super fancy one that looks like a castle complete with curtains and a slide? (Baring any expense issues, that is).

12. What do you keep under YOUR bed? Right now I have some clothes, and books, and slippers, and a whole farm of dust bunnies (which are very prolific!), and I'm sure there is at least one pair of shoes (or maybe it's a stray).

I LOVE toddler beds, for the sake of space & height. We were able to get the crib & 2 toddler beds into our tiniest room, to make way for the play room. Now, we've built a loft for Zac. If /when we get a bigger house, I'll move all the kids to twin sized.

A queen sized bed? I can only dream! We bought a full a few weeks before we got married & have used it since, even to co-sleep. No depressions, but maybe it's because there is often three of us on the full!

I'm with you on sheets. Love 'em bleached, despite what health claims say. I say, wash them once a week, bedding, at least once a season. But that's me, and I tend to change the blanket types / heaviness for each season.

Under my bed is a set of roll away storage holding all the clothes I fit into before getting pregnant with Payge. Someday, they will come back out. :0

I love how organized your random thoughts are....

1. ditto...Love new sheets.
2. We got rid of one that was over 18 years old and had been through three Gallini children and their spouses. It should have been thrown out about 3 years ago, so therefore I'm going to say 15 years.
3. I turn our new mattress twice a year, about...No depressions. New mattress has a warranty that says no depressions for 10 years or they'll replace it.
4. ditto...I only change mine every 2 weeks. Why? That's what my mom and grandma did.
5. I HATE remaking bed and yes it ALWAYS happens the night after I washed the sheets.
6. I love Carsten & Abrielle's for this reason. They never look wrinkled. Ours looks like a wadded up kleenex...
7. twice a year is impressive....I shoot for once, unless someone urinates, poops, or vomits on it...Therefore, they do tend to get washed more. However, the new pillows I bought for Abrielle's big girl bed do not wash. I have always washed pillows, but I washed one of here and all of the stuffing congealed in the middle...Not happy!!
8. Check out craigslist....
9. Carsten was a climber, but I still kept him in until he was 2. I guess it depends on how good of a climber they are. He never fell or hurt himself. He got in and out rather gracefully...
10. Never did a toddler bed. I think they're a waste of money. Why buy something that you know you're only going to use for a couple of years? I went right to the big beds.
11. I have 2 friends who bought the IKEA wood frame bunk beds and love them.
12. extra pillows in space bags...and a dirty diaper...well not anymore, but I found it there on friday evening. I have no idea how long it had been there......

When I was getting a bed, I wanted a headboard for the same reason, but it was nearly impossible to find one I liked that DIDN'T have a footboard (or a tall one). I don't fit in beds with footboards.

As for what's under the bed...nothing. I used to keep a bunch of stuff under there but that was a prime breeding ground for spiders. I don't do it anymore.

I think I wash pillows more often. About every two or three months. Blankets...when they smell.

Love hate relationship with Claire and Eliza's toddler beds.

Love the space they take up in their room (3 girls in one room)

We can sit on them, but you really aren't supposed to. Not the best for story time - I prefer the twin bed for that.

I like how they fit their bodies better. I don't like that I still haven't made blankets that fit their beds and match the room.

I like that when they fell off, it wasn't too far. I like that we got them off craigslist for $30 a piece :)

As for bunk beds:
We noticed with the bunk bed in Josh's room it was hard to sit on lower bed and read/chat with him because of the top bunk. So unless you have a place to sit in the room, it gets annoying.

What about the bunks that are l-shaped or have the bottom bed larger. If we were shopping for one, that is the route I would go. I would also make sure you can set them up separately as twins.

AARRRGGH! You cursed me! My children have NEVER puked in their beds right after a sheet changing. NEVER! They usually at least make it to my room to tell me and then puke on me.

But, Nooooo, not Tuesday evening. Noooo, Zach wakes up Wednesday with puke in his hair, it was everywhere, right after I remade the beds.

Why, why why?
