Naples Waterfall Hikes: Grimes Glen & Tannery Creek Falls

Because we love the Powell's and because I am thinking we proved ourselves worthy of real hiking (interest and ability) we were invited to go hiking with them again on a more challenging trail. We drove about 45 minutes to Naples, NY; southern edge of the Finger Lakes. We stopped first at Grimes Glen, a park on the north side of Naples. I was not prepared for anything other than food and water!

We had the wrong shoes (we should've worn water socks), the wrong clothes (shorts not jeans- no poison ivy but lots of water), and I had underestimated the beauty! I guess I'm still more used to hiking in Utah! Despite these "oopses", we still had a great time- all 11 of us!

Here is the photo documentation of our awesome day with the Powell's:

Powell's and Bailey's- goofy shot!

Half-way up the first falls at Grimes Glen

Zoë took this picture of Tannery Creek Falls

Bridge at the head of the trail at Grimes Glen.

This was when I first realized we were really not ready for this hike!

Mudslide Hill! Zoë and Kevin (and later Miranda) climbed this hill and then slid down it on their feet/bottoms.

Miranda climbing, too
Zoë and Kevin starting their fast descent.

Grimes Glen- first waterfall.
Could hike up the front of part of the falls, or climb along the side to the top.
Cole and Kevin made it to the top, Zoë decided it wasn't quite worth it after sliding half way down.

I can see six from our group in this photo.

Kevin and Cole took a little bit longer to descend the waterfall.

We had to walk IN the water! There was no trail along the side of the creek. Nica did her best to keep her leggings from getting wet. We gave up on the shoes even before the first waterfall.

Miranda, of course, didn't stay dry for long! My little water baby.

Grimes Glen- second waterfall
This had a great little swimming spot at the base of the waterfall.

This is to the side of the waterfall- it was super helpful to have these ropes to get up the side of the waterfall so you could continue hiking along the water to find the third waterfall.

Zoë at the top!

Megan working her way up the ropes to the top of the second waterfall.

View from the top of the second waterfall.

Cole, Kevin,  Eden, Zoë, Megan and I were on this last leg looking for the third waterfall.

Megan caught a frog.

Cole spotted this spider- it was as long across as my palm!

View up the creek.

Walking in the water. It was c-c-c-cold! Probably only 55-degrees.

Eden and Megan had fun together.

Zoë and Kevin hiked well together.

Kevin jumped into the water, and got into this deep spot. It was REALLY cold!

Brrrr! (Notice how I am nowhere near that!?!)

Tree roots- looks like a....?

I wonder how much longer that rock overhang will support that tree!?

Grimes Glen- third waterfall. Definitely worth the hike! It was so beautiful. I could totally see bringing some highschool/college kids here and sliding down the waterfall!
There were some ropes to help with climbing up/down the waterfall. we didn't go any further.

View from the middle of the waterfall.

Going down!

View just before rounding the bend and seeing...
The third waterfall.

Megan found a footprint rock.

Next to the face i the root, somebody decided this moss-over-root needed a little help.

I could frame this picture!

Tannery Creek Falls

After Grimes Glen, we drove a short distance and walked along Tannery Creek to a gorgeous waterfall.

The entrance to the trail is behind the city's plowing equipment.

There were different heights of waterfalls all along this creek.
Again, we were walking in the water nearly the entire way!

Again, Miranda spent most of her time IN the water (and without shoes she hiked this!)

Swim stop.

The waterfall here was just far enough away from the underpart that you could hide behind the water!
See? Hiding

Tannery Creek Waterfall (the 60' one)

Since Miriam and I were a little behind with barefoot Miranda, the other kids had gone ahead of us- and had already made it to the top of the falls and back by the time we got there!

Zoë swam out to the base of the waterfall, but the water was so incredibly cold, it wasn't fun to swim in. If the day had been warmer, or the water warmer, we might've tried sliding down this waterfall.

Nica and I hiked up to the waterfall, and even ducked behind it.

Nica did great on the slippery parts, and holding on to the rope. But, we both needed Miriam, who was awesome to help!

Kevin slid down this waterfall (as did Zoë, but she was so far ahead I didn't get to see it!)
He was kind enough to slide down with Miranda. I think jeans would've been better apparel for this hike....
Miriam was a life-saver! She helped my girls up and down this hike.

Yep, I was on the hike!

One of the waterfalls first seen on the hike (I took this on our way out).

Another print-worthy photo
